ROYAL PAVILION GROUNDS

Mr and Mrs Wheeler on the footway adjoining the Dome, year not known. Colloquially known as the “Wheeler Band”, he played a flute or whistle pipe, while she quavered a tune in vocal spasms. They always looked very miserable, walked in the gutter and their usual beat was along Western Road down North Street to the Pavilion and back. He was often called “Old do-believe” from his favourite hymn starting “I do believe”. They were about Brighton Streets in the 1880s and were reputed to do well despite frequent arguments and tiffs. Their very appearance was designed to arouse public sympathy.
