LANSDOWNE STREET

A derelict house, No 2 on the east side of this street, photographed on 7 October 1962. This house was last lived in about 1950 and soon afterwards it was shored up by these massive timber baulks. For some reason it remained like this for 20 years as it was not until June 1971 that the old house was demolished. The site is now being redeveloped together with adjoining shops in Western Road. Lansdowne Street was started in the late 1850’s, but only on the west side. These are the houses with small front gardens. The east side houses were built in the 1800’s.
