THE PINES, FURZE HILL

This quite imposing house was built in 1902 for Dr W A Bowring, one of the surgeons at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, and stayed in his family throughout its life. After his death, his daughter continued to live here for many years, but as she became elderly the difficulties of looking after a fifteen roomed house, and a fairly large garden, eventually led to her moving to a nursing Home where she died in the early 1980’s. The fate of the house then became uncertain, but in her will Miss Bowring directed that it should be used for charitable purposes. Photographed on 25 March 1984, it has since been restored and extended and will probably be used for housing elderly people, thus ensuring that it will still have a useful life.
