RURAL PRESTON

Looking across the railway line and sheds to the cornfields stretching up the Ditchling Road. The photographer was probably standing on ground at the rear of Hamilton Road and facing slightly north-east. Between the railway and the cornfields can be just seen Preston Road running between low white walls. On these same fields were later built Springfield, Florence and Rugby Roads. On the horizon can be seen the Jolly Brewer and the line of Ditchling Road can be clearly traced. At this period Preston Park was still private land owned by the Stanford family of Preston Manor. The long line of trees running obliquely from Preston Road are those now marking the Eastern boundary of the Park, facing Preston Park Avenue. Note the farm buildings somewhere near the present junction of Stanford Avenue and Southdown Avenue. For these photographs, and the originals of those on the succeeding page, we are indebted to the late Mr. William J Bramwell.
