LEWES VIADUCT

Two photographs showing the Viaduct in open country and farmlands before building development began. The large one was taken from rising ground adjoining the Railway Works looking down on New England and Old Shoreham Roads. The other gives a closer look at the rural Preston Road running between two white walls with a large field to the west and market gardens to the east. No sign of London Road Station, which was not opened until October 1st 1877, though carriage sheds, can be seen on the embankment where the viaduct finishes. On the skyline, the Jolly Brewer Inn and Warleigh Lodge.
