CHARLES STREET

Here are two more photographs of the houses seen on the previous page but 21 years later, in May 1964. By then, with the adjoining building to the south, they had been acquired by the Southdown Bus Co. for eventual redevelopment, and were standing empty though externally mostly in good condition. As they were subject to preservation orders a Ministry enquiry was held in late 1968 to decide whether they should be demolished. Although the Inspector recommended this course the Minister took the opposite view and decided that they should remain. What the final outcome will be no one knows but the houses still stand.
