CARLTON HILL

Some of the worst slums were in streets turning off Carlton Hill as will be seen on other pages.
This long narrow street, the building of which started in 1810, was named after Carlton House, the Royal Residence, but there the similarity ended!
On the site of the shop at the corner of Nelson Place. formerly stood the original Salvation Army Congress Hall, later moved to Edward Street.
Higher up the hill at the corner of Nelson Street was Barratt's, the grocers, which had been there since 1870.
