CARLTON HILL. ST JOHNS CHURCH SCHOOL

Two photographs [this and following] of this old school, for long a landmark in this dingy neighbourhood. St Johns Church, further up Carlton Hill, was consecrated in January, 1840, and the school opened soon afterwards. It was to some extent replaced by the modern, present-day, St Johns School, which opened, on the other side of the road, in October, 1914, but for many years afterwards it remained in use for scholastic purposes. Demolished- 1980.
Thinking that the building was ripe for removal, I had this photograph taken on March 3rd, 1961. Eighteen years later, the old building still stood when the following photograph was taken on June 10th, 1979. Note the growth of trees during the intervening years.
