NORTH ROAD – PRESBYTERIAN HALL

These two photographs were taken on 29 September 1968 at a time when the future of the adjoining Presbyterian Church was under discussion. Built in 1825 as the Hanover Chapel, it was taken over by the Presbyterians in 1845. In 1866, there was an extension to the north, when this hall and an assembly Hall were built. The church closed to worship several years ago and the hall was put to various uses, with the wall facing North Road being daubed with a bizarre mural. In 1981, the hall was destroyed by fire, which at least removed the eyesore mural, and as I write – in 1983- we wait to see what will take its place.
