MAY ROAD

This short road, just to the west of Elm Grove, was one of the first ventures into municipal housing by Brighton Council. In 1887, Alderman Abbey and Daniel Friend gave a plot of land in this area for the erection of artisans’ dwellings. For many years the land lay idle until in 1904 May Road (named after the Borough Surveyor, Mr. F.J.C. May) was laid out and building commenced. On the south side were built 25 terraced cottages and at the top and the north side 6 double tenement dwellings, all of which can be clearly seen in the photographs. All the remaining houses on both sides were built privately starting in 1931. The council houses were condemned in 1985 and demolition began later in that year. So that some record of these houses could be kept, I had the photographs taken on 19 May 1985
