BEVENDEAN BOTTLENECK

The houses in the foreground, up to the children, are in Widdicombe Way, and were built privately by Braybons Ltd. in 1932/4. Beyond the narrow finish to this road were the fields, farmlands and barns of Hodshrove Farm and there was little thought of further development. However, Brighton Corporation bought the farm and in 1937 started the East Moulsecombe Council Estate. They built Hodshrove Road right up to the end of Widdicombe Way, whose owner/occupiers declined to surrender parts of their gardens. Date of photograph 7 May 1938. The matter was later resolved and the road widened.
