GRAND PARADE

The large house, No. 47 dominates this photograph, taken in 1873, which is so out of keeping with the adjoining houses on either side that one wonders why it was built in this style. At this period Grand Parade was still a fashionable neighbourhood (Lord Molesworth lived at No.43) and was chiefly residential, though many of the houses were being used as lodging houses. Two doors below the large house was Gwatkins the chemist and next door a house agent’s office.
