CATHOLIC APOSTOLIC CHURCH, CARLTON HILL

This was not one of Brighton’s fashionable churches. It was built in 1864 behind the houses of Carlton Hill, which then almost hid it from view, and was consecrated on 12 May 1865. It remained in use until the early part of the 1939-1945 war, when it was closed and never reopened. The old houses were cleared from in front of the church at the end of he war. It was later acquired as an annexe to the Art School and will be demolished when, if ever, the Art School is rebuilt.
Looking west to Grand Parade with Carlton Hill on the right. On the bare ground in the foreground at one time stood the slum houses of Sun Street. Date of photographs 12 May 1954.
