SURRENDEN DISTRICT

This photograph was taken in 1927 by the late Harold Clunn. He was standing in the field enclosed within the wide bend of Withdean Road, just where the two large bungalows are now, looking across the London Road valley to the hill beyond. Note the eastern sweep of Surrenden Crescent then in course of being built up, and the narrow Surrenden Crescent Road winding up to Ditchling Road. The lone house to the north is Varndean Farmhouse, built in 1923, of which modern photographs appear on another page.
