WITHDEAN LODGE

The five ladies seen in this photograph were sisters, the Misses Gregory. They were arrayed outside their house, Withdean Lodge, which stood well back from London Road, Withdean, at the south corner of Varndean Road. This large house was built from them in the 1860s, and they lived there for many years, into the present century in fact. Well known for their benefice, they were responsible for the founding of the Dog’s Home in Robertson Road in the 1880s and for the drinking fountain, formerly in London Road facing the foot of Tongdean Lane and now still standing, facing south at the junction of old London Road and the by-pass, at Patcham. The Ladies’ dresses suggest the period was the late 1880s. Withdean Lodge has been demolished and replaced by blocks of modern flats.
