These two photographs taken in the extensive garden of this house on 17 October 1896, was on the occasion of the first meet of Brighton Harriers. Capt. Howard Welch, who lived in Southdown House is seen with the huntsman. In the 1920s part of this garden was acquired for the Patcham by-pass, opened in February 1927, and the large wall seen is now to the west of this busy arterial road.
