PATCHAM PLACE

As is well known this fine house was erected in the early part of the reign of Queen Elizabeth, and was for long the residence of the Stapley family. Famous for its black mathematical tiles, it was acquired by Brighton Council in 1926 for only £6600, surely one of the best bargains ever made by the Corporation. I have no idea when the photographs were taken, but as there is no sign of the high wall which formerly enclosed the estate, doubtless both are of recent origin.
