PATCHAM RAILWAY BRIDGE

This railway bridge which spanned the main line between Preston Park Station and Patcham Tunnel, was at the rear of Brangwyn Drive. It was built in 1840, as a farm accommodation bridge, at the request of the Marquess of Abergavenny, who at the time farmed on both sides of the railway. It was never used for anything heavier than farm carts. When the farmland was replaced by houses, it was wired off at both ends, and remained so for many years, though sometimes used by pedestrians. These photographs were taken on 30 September 1951 and the bridge was demolished a few weeks later.
