PORTSLADE GAS WORKS

An aerial photograph containing a great deal of interest. Apart from the obvious things as the Gas Works etc. note the long stretch of empty Kingsway, and the equally unbuilt-up New Church and Portland Roads, running from left to right. Marine Park can be seen, with Marine Avenue just below it, St Leonard’s and St Phillips Churches, Wish Barn and Wish Cottage and parts of Glebe villas and Portland Villas. The vast area of Market garden land (centre) was covered with houses from Erroll Road to Saxon Road during the years from 1929 to 1933. The year of this photograph was 1921. The clue is provided at the very top, where, along the Portland Road frontage can be seen the first of the houses in Ingram Crescent under construction.
