MARINE PARADE AND MADEIRA DRIVE

This is a copy of a very old original photograph, which must have been taken, at the very latest, in the early 1860s. Compare it with the two 1869 photographs overleaf. Note that the mounds of chalk and earth are very much more solid, and that the small flight of steps, in the wall in front of the four white houses, had not yet been constructed. The blurred appearance of this photograph is due to continued copying and recopying of the ancient original.
