MARINE PARADE

One of the few photographs in existence which shows Marine Parade before the construction of Madeira Road. The concrete wall of the Parade, built in the 1830s, had been backed by earth from the beach upwards. In rough weather the sea washed right up to the base of the cliff. The iron railings at the kerbside had been erected only a year or two earlier and were still without their diagonal cross members. In the distance can be seen the West Pier under construction.
