WEST STREET OF THE 1920s

Old houses of varying age, adjoining Little Russell Street. This was poor class property given over to cheap shops and eating-in houses designed to catch the eyes of trippers and formed part of the extensive Stoll site purchased by the Corporation in 1929. The whole area down to the George Hotel was cleared in 1932 and the extent of this clearance can be gauged by the photographs overleaf.
