POST OFFICE, SHIP STREET

The old Post office, about 1907. It was established here in 1849 having moved from smaller premises in New Road. Enlargements of the premises took place in 1858 and 1870. The larger adjoining building served for many years as the sorting office until the present building was erected on the site of Reed’s foundry in North Road, in 1922. Soon afterwards the public departments of the Post Office moved next door into the present building.
