THE NEW SHIP HOTEL, SHIP STREET

The New Ship was a 17c Inn that was referred to in Goodwyn’s Rental in 1665 as “a cottage, stable & garden called the New Ship”. In 1741 it was used as the first Coach office and a barn had been added to it by this time. The Hotel premises shown in the photographs replace the old Inn during the course of the last century and were themselves demolished in 1933 to make way for the present Henekey’s premises.(2007–Hotel du Vin.Ed) Somehow the old building seems to blend more harmoniously with the others in Ship Street, than does its successor. The two older photographs were taken during the 1920’s and the other in 1934 when the new building was nearly complete.
