VICTORIA TERRACE

The Terrace was built about 1840 but never finished. For some time during the past century they were used for private and boarding schools but later the ground floors were converted to shops. Then the terrace continued its uneventful way until 1970 after which the developers started buying the properties which were listed in September 1971. From then on there were applications to demolish or completely to refurbish the buildings on which Hove Corporation and East Sussex County Council frequently had differing views. All this occupied the years from 1971 to 1977, and thinking that these buildings might be removed, I had these photographs taken in December 1972. Nothing came from all the negotiations and the terrace remains, with most of the shops reoccupied, but for how much longer, who knows?
