MANCHESTER STREET

This small street, leading from Marine Parade to St James’s Street, has in recent years been given over almost exclusively to business use. Built early in the nineteenth century it contained houses with very fine doorways, used as guest or lodging houses. Numbers 2 to 4 on the west side, seen here, had for many years been the offices of Southdown Motor Services. They were empty when photographed on 9 February 1975. Demolished in 1982, and a block of flats is being built on the site in 1983.
