BLACK ROCK

This photograph is a copy of an old stereoscopic one and it provides a remarkable contrast to the next photograph. At this time the trim villa was used as offices of the Brighton & Hove General Gas Co. When fresh offices were built on another site, in the early years of the 20c, it became the home of the Company’s General Manager. The adjacent 1933 photograph (on another page) shows the building intact but within just a few years its appearance had radically altered and weeds had taken over the well-kept gardens.

Additional Information: This villa was built by the Brighton Gas, Lighting and Coke Co (founded 1818) and occupied by its Superintendent & Engineer. John O N Rutter occupied this post from 1835 until 1881 and is possibly the person shown in the photograph. The Brighton & Hove General Gas Co took over this company in 1882 and production was moved to Portslade although the gas holders were retained.
