WINDLESHAM HOUSE

The laconic comment “Street in Brighton 1880” suggests that the photographer had little interest in the large house which is the focal point of his picture. This building, almost at the extreme western end of the town, was erected in 1836 for the Reverend Scott Malden, who established here Windlesham School for Boys. The tall trees in the gardens of the Temple and the Vicarage give Victoria Road a very rural appearance. The school remained here until 1913 when it moved to Portslade.
