SURRENDEN DISTRICT

The date of this photograph is 26 April 1928. At this time there was a project to install a Zoo in the fields that then separated Withdean Hall from Surrenden Crescent. There was no thought of Withdean Crescent then. The field in which the zebras were grazing can be picked out in the previous photograph, as can the houses of Surrenden Crescent. The large field laid out as allotments was owned by Mr. Emile Moreau, of Fairlie Place, Surrenden Road, who let it as allotments so as to prevent it being built on.
