LONDON ROAD, WITHDEAN

Two photographs of the country road, as it then was, in December 1904. The road was widened by several yards on the east side during the 1920s. The present Tongdean Lane enters this road at the spot where the men are standing, but was not then in existence. Instead a narrow lane ran obliquely from the railway line until emerging by the side of the distant lamppost.
