TONGDEAN LANE

These photographs were taken in 1920 when the Tongdean Lane we now know was newly laid out for building on either side. Compare these with the 1904 photographs on the previous page. In this photograph is the view at the foot of Tongdean Lane facing the fountain, which formerly stood in London Road. Between 1922 and 1927 there was an extensive widening of London road from Withdean to Pycombe in the course of which the fountain was removed to its present site at the junction of Old London Road, Patcham and the by-pass.
