THE FRENCH GARDEN, WITHDEAN

This unique garden was started in 1908 by Captain A.B.S. Fraser (late mayor of Hove) with the help of his brother and a friend. His head gardener was a Frenchman – Monsieur Lecoq – hence the name of the garden. King Edward V11 visited it in 1909 and sent his head gardener, Mr Cook, to see it later. The site of the garden was west of the main London Road between Western Withdean and Withdean Cottages of Withdean Farm. In the 1920s the land was sold for building purposes, the first house being Swandean, built in 1927.
