TONGDEAN LANE AREA

The incorporation of this area into Greater Brighton in 1928 led to its early development. Valley Drive was laid out and houses at the lower end were built in the early 1930s. Building at the top end of the Drive started after the 1939-1945 War, but the portion here shown from Hillside Way onwards remained undeveloped principally because of the long back gardens of Tongdean Lane which ran right down to Valley Drive. Part of this ground is now being cleared for building. Photographed November 1954.
