THE CHATTRI, THE BUNGALOW

What, in my youth, was described to me as “ the custodian’s cottage”, is revealed, by this photograph to have been spruce bungalow some distance from the Chattri. It had a very short life and I never saw it. Probably built at the same time, the cost of the building is reported as £1120. The decision to demolish it was taken by Brighton Corporation on 2 July 1931. The custodian’s job was probably a lonely sinecure as in the 1920’s few Brightonians made the long journey to the Chattri, and vandalism was virtually unknown.
