PALACE PIER

The pier in the early days of its construction. The watching crowds are on the groyne immediately to the west. The Palace Pier Company was formed in 1886 and the first piles were driven in November 1891. Work progressed until the skeleton of steelwork was completed to a point a little short of the Pier head. Then, for several years, the structure was left derelict, with the skeleton of the Pier shut off from the promenade by a wooden hoarding. The Pier was completed and opened to the public in 1899.
