WEST PIER c.1894

These two photographs of the pier date from about the same time, the photograph by Frith below being positively dated as 1894. In the one above the Hotel Metropole (1890) can be seen but without the later extension eastwards which followed within very few years. Note the piles of wood in the centre of the pier, doubtless to provide the wooden part of the later central wind breaks. The spire of Christ Church, Montpelier Road, figures prominently.
