WEST BATTERY, KINGS ROAD. c.1850s

This is a very old photograph, probably taken by Edward Fox during the 1850’s. It shows the West battery which was erected here in 1793, and consisted of 8 cannon, 42 pounders, later reduced to 6. The area in which the Battery was enclosed had twice been curtailed for road improvements before it was removed in 1859. The crescent of houses behind Artillery Place, housed the officer in charge and the magazines. Hobden’s Baths, originally known as Artillery baths, were established here in 1813. Note the “fly” (carriage) standing at the kerbside opposite the Baths.
