REMOVAL OF WEST BATTERY, KINGS ROAD. 1858

This is a modern enlargement of a very ancient and small photograph. In the process much of the detail and clarity had been lost. It shows the dismantling of the Battery actually in progress. The flagstaff is being lowered and the muzzle-loaded cannon have already been removed from their mountings. Beyond are the old houses of Artillery Place, which were to be demolished but a year or two afterwards. A gravel bank then led from the pavement to the beach below.
