REMOVAL OF WEST BATTERY, KINGS ROAD 1858

Fifty years after the previous old photograph of 1858 was taken, this arena was to be found on the beach almost directly in front of where the West Battery had stood. The beach entertainers were at first styled “The Highwaymen” but by the time of the 1914/18 War the troupe was known as “Ellison’s Entertainers” and they remained under this title until 1929, when the site was given up and the arena removed. This photograph of uncertain period, shows few paying patrons, a common feature, which is confirmed by the study of the amateur’s snap taken in 1925.
