ELM GROVE PANORAMA

This fine panoramic photograph was taken from the rear room of a house in Roundhill Crescent, at some time in the 1890s. Directly in the foreground are backs of the houses in Upper Lewes Road, Lewes Road is hidden from view while Franklin Road can be seen in all its width. Facing the waste ground at the top area few houses in Wellington Street but there is no sign of Seville Street, Coronation Street, or Elm Grove School. There are many gaps in Elm Grove itself, but one can see a few houses in Bonchurch Road with others at the top and bottom of Whippingham Road. beyond these were fields and market gardens in the area from which Hanover Mill had only recently been removed. On the other side of Elm Grove there were then no houses between Queens Park road and the Workhouse.
