COLONNADE MEWS

Tucked away behind the tall houses at the southern end of Grand Parade, and almost hidden from view but with a narrow entrance from Edward Street, are these old flint buildings, which are still there after many years after these photographs were taken in the 1960s. Their origins are not known or documented, but they figure prominently in the mid-Victorian Directories as livery stables run by Charles Shaw for many years, the address being Colonnade Mews. This business was given up in the 1800s, after which the Edward Street property became the home of Veterinary Surgeons. As can be seen, in recent years part of the area has been used for the inevitable car-parking.
