DEVONIA, LONDON ROAD, PATCHAM

Hard by the junction of London Road and Carden Avenue, stood these two large houses – Devonia and Herons Court, with substantial front and rear gardens. To the north there had been another similar large house – The Knole, with an even larger back garden. I do not know when they were built (street directories do not help) but my guess would be in the very early years of the present century. After private ownership and occupation for many years, Brighton Corporation acquired them and Devonia became a Welfare Services Residential Home. Photographed in February 1985, the house survived for two more years, being removed in 1987, for a sheltered housing development.
