OLD LONDON ROAD

Not many years previously just a country area, but Brighton’s suburbia had crept out here by the period of these photographs, 1937 or 1938. Just south of Patcham by-pass, the view above is of the site of Ridgeside Avenue and the area now covered by the Brangwyn Estate. The house shown, which exists to this day, was known for years as Mill Farm House, and was occupied by the Hammond family whose Bakery (formerly Ballards) is shown in photographs on another page. Ten houses known as The Woodlands, built during the 1950s now occupy the adjoining land.
