STANDEAN FARM

The Brighton Corporation purchased this old farm, about a mile north east of Patcham, from the Nickson family, during the 1930s. The Corporation restored it in 1939. The house was requisitioned by the military authorities during the 1939-1945 War and was completely gutted. The Corporation leveled it to the ground in 1951. It was an Elizabethan house with stone mullioned windows and an arched doorway. The front of the house was burnt out in the 1880s, but the east end escaped the fire and had mullioned windows to the last. The stone building on the right was the raised head of the well from which water was pumped back into the house.
