THE FOUNTAIN CROSSING

Increased motor traffic after the 1914-1918 war led to some form of control being needed at this focal point. The introduction of the one-way traffic lanes in 1926 helped, but the cross traffic from York Place to Grand Parade and from Gloucester Place to Richmond Place caused further difficulties. In the middle 1920s the familiar traffic policeman was installed at the fountain and this human control was continued for nearly 30 years.
