WEST STREET

A very fine photograph, of the 1880s, which for once shows the east, rather than the west side of this old street. Note the Grand Skating Rink, the old style Chatfield Hotel at the narrow entrance to South Street, the Women’s’ Lying-in Institution, private houses with their forecourts, and the profusion of gas-lamps. My guess is that the year was 1887, the year of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee.
